New York Winter: What to Wear
The winter is wintering here in New York City, and I am doing my best to dress warm while still looking cute. Now that I’ve lived here for a couple years, there are a ton of staples in my closet that I know are going to help me brave the cold winter days. So, I wanted to share with you all everything I have been loving this season to take on another New York City winter!
Coats and Jackets
Houndstooth Jacket
Whoever said you can’t wear pink during the winter was seriously deranged. I have had a coat similar to this one for years, and I get THE most compliments when I wear it. This is perfect for when you’re running errands in the city and need something longer to keep out the chill.
Shearling Coat
Fuzzy coats are one of my go-to’s during the winter, and I love how neutral this one is because it goes with everything. I have loved wearing this when going to my local coffee shop or popping into a local diner for a quick breakfast. It keeps the chill out without being heavy to carry around.
Puffer Jacket
A puffer jacket like this is essential if you are visiting or moving to New York. I have so many different variations of puffer jackets because they are the exact thing I need when it is literally frigid outside. They are cozy and probably the warmest jacket you could wear in the city.
Sherpa Coat
If you’re looking for a more fun coat for late nights out going to the theater or sharing a drink with your friend, you need a sherpa coat. I wore this so many times this season, and it felt like I was wearing a fabulous version of a robe. It was cozy AND cute!
Accessories
Scarf
A scarf is literally one of my favorite winter accessories. One of the worst parts about NYC winters are the harsh winds that are constantly blowing between buildings. I love using a scarf to wrap around my face when it gets super chilly and my face feels frozen! Pink is my personal favorite, but I have this scarf in a ton of other colors.
Earmuffs
Let me tell you, one of the worst places to get cold is on your ears. I swear, if you let your ears get cold, you are going to get the worst headache while exploring the city. I love to use earmuffs like these because not only do they keep my ears toasty, but they are also super adorable!
Beanie
If you’re not just worried about your ears getting cold but your whole head, you NEED a beanie. I have acquired so many of these while living here, and they have never let me down. While they may give you some hat hair, it’s totally worth it for how cozy it makes you feel!
Fleece Tights
So many people used to tell me that there was no way to wear skirts and dresses during the winter, but let me be the one to tell you, it’s more than possible! These fleece tights have kept me SO warm during the winter that sometimes I feel like they’re keeping me a little too toasty.
Vest
I wasn’t always a vest girly, but not only do they look great in photos, but they are super easy to layer on whatever outfit you have planned for the day. I can’t tell you how many times I knew I needed a little something extra to keep me warm, and my vest has always done the job and never let me down (or be cold!).
Socks
My biggest piece of advice for winter accessories: invest in good socks! I feel like we often overlook keeping our feet warm, but normal socks are going to do nothing if you’re walking through snow or the wind chill is through the roof. I am always wearing boot socks or thermal socks to keep my feet from freezing in my shoes!
Headband
If you’re worried about messing up your hair or want a more chic look to keep your ears warm, you need this pink fuzzy headband. I swear I see girls wearing these all over my Pinterest boards, and they truly give you the elevated look you want when you’re exploring the wonders of the city.
Gloves
There is no worse feeling than trying to enjoy the beautiful sights of the city while it feels like your fingers are numb. Gloves have always been the biggest lifesaver for me, and I always make sure I have an extra pair packed in my purse or coat pocket so I’m never without them. Bonus points if the gloves have the ability to let you use your phone touchscreen!
Shoes
UGGs
As basic as people may think they are, UGGs don’t mess around when it comes to keeping your feet warm. There has never been a time when I’ve been walking the streets and thought my feet were cold while wearing my pair of UGGs. I love my pink pairs, but the classics are better for matching more outfits!
Rain Boot
If you’re moving to New York, there are days where the snow has melted and turned to literal slush, and the last thing you want to do is slip in it. So, if it’s not super cold outside, I recommend these pink rain boots that will keep out any unwanted snow from seeping its way into your shoes.
Snow Boots
If you’re in the market for more wintery boots that are made for the days where the snow is fresh, these white boots are perfect. They are waterproof and have a fuzzy lining to help keep your ankles and feet nice and warm. Plus, white shoes like these will go with every outfit you bring on a trip!
I can’t believe how many winters I have spent in New York City now! So, whether you’re visiting or live here, I hope these winter accessories keep you warm the rest of the season!
